Human Metabolism Made Easy

Introduction And Background
The entire concept of metabolism is important if you are planning on staying healthy and fit and not lazy and obese. Human metabolism is different for everybody but there are a few things that you need to understand in order to do right by your body. To understand this concept, take your car for example. If you understand how it works best and what you can do to maintain the horse power and the speed and get the best mileage out of it, wouldn’t the car work at its most efficient? The same is the case with your body. If you know what is good for it and how it works best, considering the human metabolism being the key to all of it, why not do it? This article will explain the human metabolism and the effects it can have on the body.

What Is Metabolism?
You need to know first what metabolism really is to understand any further concepts related to it. Metabolism is basically the chemical processes that are occurring in every cell of your body combined and the rate at which they are happening too. Metabolism is basically where you end up converting food to provide energy for all that is happening inside the cell. The energy is derived from what you eat, whether it is carbs, proteins or fats. These types of reactions in the cell are what allow the cells to reproduce if they are of that sort or to maintain their internal environment. Basically, if you look at it as a complete picture, the word metabolism refers to all the chemical processes taking place inside each cell of the body collectively. Imagine that you have eaten a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. Now imagine that vanilla ice-cream being digested and used by most of the cells of your body. Now do you understand the concept somewhat?

Types Of Metabolism
Metabolism in the body is of two types. There is catabolism which is the break-down of nutrients to provide energy and is done by either respiration of the cells or for energy from storage. And then there is anabolism which is gathering the nutrients of cells which can be proteins or any acids for proper cell maintenance. Now the important thing to understand here is that catabolism is the process where usually energy is released while anabolism is the process where energy is usually consumed. Hopefully, you have understood the concept of metabolism till here.

The Importance Of Reactions
The reactions in the body that are occurring are usually run by enzymes which are instrumental in allowing energy to be consumed or released. In fact, enzymes decide whether or not the reactions are catabolic or anabolic.

Basal Metabolic Rate
In easier words that you will understand, the basal metabolic rate is the rate at which chemical reactions are occurring inside the body at resting period, probably when you are at rest or while you are asleep. This is what is referred to as BMR.

What Affects Metabolism?
There are many factors which affect the metabolic rate. First you will understand a few things that affect the metabolic rate and only after that will you understand how important the metabolic rate is for the body.

  • Your genetic make-up affects your metabolic rate, believe it or not. Without following a certain lifestyle even, your metabolic rate differs. Have you ever noticed that there are some people who eat a lot and do not exercise manage to stay very thin while those who control what they eat have to really work at maintaining their weight? It is because of the metabolic rate. Those who have a faster metabolism burn fats faster which means it doesn’t matter how much they eat, they’ll use it all up as opposed to those who have a slower metabolism.
  • Your routine affects your metabolic rate too. If you are not getting enough sleep, it can take a toll on your metabolic rate and can reduce it somewhat.
  • The food you eat also affect metabolism. There are some foods which can raise the rate while some can lower it, all depends on what type of food you are having and how much of it you are having.
  • Exercise raises your metabolism but only if you are regular at it. Otherwise it will be only be the time you exercise will your metabolic rate be faster, other times it will be normal.

Conclusion
Hopefully, by now you understand the concept of metabolism and what it does to the body, in easier terms. Metabolism is an important factor in weight loss and there are several techniques of losing weight by raising the rate at which energy is being consumed by the body! And as you have already read, there are ways you can control metabolism!
