The main drink that everyone loves and should have is water but the thing with water is, it keeps us hydrated but does not really give us energy. Sodium helps to retain water and since water does not have that and one does not eat while exercising or playing, water is lost. So all in all, if the truth is looked at, sports drinks can be healthy for us but it depends on what type of workout one is doing. If it is a normal stroll or a normal jog around the park and one is drinking a sports drink because of it, it’s not that good. Water should keep you hydrated enough and is good for you too. However, if you are undergoing some strenuous workouts or are playing a game for a long time in which you require energy and stamina, sports drinks are alright in that scenario.

Not really. Sports drinks usually contain carbs, meaning glucose, for quick energy and are designed in a way that they are quickly absorbed too. This gives all sports players a mechanism to get quick energy. Ever seen a tennis player run to the side to get a sip of something? It is usually a sports drink that energizes him and can lead him to get back that spring in his step which was somehow lost during the game. The Sports drinks also have the essential salts and some contain specific vitamins as well, making it an overall perfect combination for your sports regimes. The ingredients are not unhealthy and if there is some coloring present, then that too is present in most of the foods and is not something that should bother you.

Sports drinks are usually yummy! Even though water is a good hydrating agent, you have to admit that it has no flavor. And most of the sports drinks are designed in a manner that you want to taste them over and over again during a game or when you are thirsty. This is a major benefit amongst other things as well. One more thing that you should definitely look at is that when you are sweating and losing a lot of water, your electrolyte balance of the body also suffers. This means that you are losing important ions of the body such as sodium or potassium. Sports drinks contain these electrolytes and can set the balance straight!

There is one unhealthy factor to sports drinks. Since they have sugar in them, the entire point of exercising is not entirely met since you are gaining all the calories back. And this is an adverse effect especially if the strenuous workout was not done for enjoyment purposes but for weight loss. Your insulin levels are also disturbed if you keep drinking it after every workout because of its sugar content. Another thing that makes water a good alternative to sports drinks is the money in your pockets. Sports drinks are not cheap and they usually cost a good deal, especially if you want to buy a crate for yourself. Thus, if you want to have a sports drink, make sure you are suitable for it and that it is healthy for you and not unhealthy; the major thing to look at is your weight.
